Beware of Roofing Scams
Unfortunately, there are a number of people out there that have no problem taking advantage of good people for a quick payday. Some of these crooks call themselves roofers.
It takes more than a truck and a ladder to be a roofer. It takes a material distribution system and supplier. It takes extensive knowledge of roofing systems from a variety of manufacturers and the many components they make. It takes a skillset that goes far beyond a nail-gun and how to lay down a shingle.
But it takes even more than this: it takes an actual company that will stand by their work while being above board on everything they do. Fort Worth Roofing Expert is a contractor that stands by all we do 100% and believes in communication, customer care and integrity in all we do.
How to Spot a Roofing Scam
You have likely heard a few sayings like “you get what you pay for” and “if it looks too good to be true it probably is.” You’ve heard these axioms because there is some truth to them, and with roofing it’s no different. One sure way to spot a roofing scam goes along with the “too good to be true” saying.
If you are given a quote for your roofing job that seems incredibly low priced, look out. Save yourself money and heartache by calling a couple of other roofers in the area and asking for a quote, preferably ones that has an office building. If there is a large discrepancy between those quotes and the super low asking price of the “roofer” that you’ve been talking to, you can bet there is something shady going on.
These kinds of “low-ball” roofers can offer a ridiculous estimate for a number of reasons. One is that they know they won’t spend much time on the project by cutting corners or even leaving out components completely. They also typically use low grade or even stolen roofing materials, as well as mismatched materials bought in bulk.
So if it looks too good to be true…beware!
Roofing Insurance Fraud and Hail Damage Scams
Homeowner’s insurance is a bill you pay to ensure that your home is protected from a number of things like inclement weather damage and other things. When it comes to roofing, the most common type of claim made is for weather related damage.
When this occurs, and is found by a roofing professional like ourselves by conducting an inspection, a claim can be filed to help cover the cost of repairs or a total re-roof (depending on the individual set of factors).
One thing that many roofers, even ones that have been in business for a long time, do to gain a job is to offer a “referral bonus” to you. This “referral bonus” is in fact a ploy to pay your deductible for you so that you end up not paying a dime out of pocket.
In the state of Texas (and many others) it is ILLEGAL for a roofer to pay your deductible. This “referral bonus” tactic is a way for them to (barely) skirt the illegality of this method of landing a roofing job.
While this might seem like a good idea at first and isn’t “technically illegal”, since they can pay you for a list of your family and friends, it’s not just bad, shady business. It’s unethical.
That might not faze some people, but consider this. If this supposedly “reputable company” is willing to throw morality and integrity to the wind and skirt the edges of illegal activity for work, can you really trust them with your home?
Take caution: if there is an investigation launched into a roofer by an insurance company for this kind of activity and you are one of the company’s customers, expect a knock on your door. And the worst thing is that most honest people who wouldn’t engage in this activity have no idea that they are being led down this path by immoral companies that can’t get work without using quasi-legal tactics.
